The World Health Organization (WHO) seeks suitable applicants for the position below at the Nairobi, Kenya.

  • Education: Master’s degree.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years.

Other Requirements / Information:

  • Master’s degree in virology, microbiology, molecular epidemiology, genomics, genetics, or other related science-based discipline from an accredited institution.
  • PhD degree in molecular microbiology/virology is an added advantage.
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional work experience in public health pathogen genomics. At least 7 years of proven experience in public health in the field of preparedness and response to epidemic events, outbreaks and other public health emergencies.
  • Experience in WHO and/or the UN System in the areas of outbreak preparedness and response; field experience in public health programmes or emergency response programmes in developing countries.

Description Of Duties:

Within the framework of the delegated authority, the incumbent is assigned all or part of the following duties:

  • Provide technical oversight for the effective implementation of the regional genomic surveillance strategy in the respective hubs.
  • Provide guidance on the implementation of technical guidelines for surveillance and molecular diagnosis of emerging pathogens.
  • Strengthen the capacity of countries in the respective hubs for genomic surveillance to address emerging pathogens and anti-microbial resistance (AMR).
  • In close collaboration with relevant programmes, ensure the implementation of informed epidemiological analysis and sampling approaches to capture the emergence of variants of concern.
  • Collaborate with partners and Centres of Excellence to build and sustain capacities of Member States to conduct genomic sequencing, including bioinformatics.
  • Provide technical support in the functioning of the genomic sequencing laboratory networks in the sub-region including: sample referral mechanisms within and outside the countries; biosecurity and biosafety; maintenance of sub-regional biobanks; and quality assurance systems.
  • In close collaboration with partners, coordinate the provision of laboratory equipment, supplies and reagents to reference laboratories in the sub-region.
  • Contribute to the development and publication of periodic reports and documentation on genomic surveillance.
  • In close collaboration with partners, promote joint planning and implementation, advocacy and resource mobilization for strengthening genomic surveillance to address pathogens with pandemic and epidemic potential.
  • Provide technical guidance and support in the area of genomic data management including regular reporting of emerging pathogens using GISAID and other recognized open-access genomic platforms.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
